The Botswana Planetary and Space Science workshop 29-31 October 2018

The Botswana Planetary and Space Science workshop, which took place at BIUST from 29-31 October, was an opportunity to explore how Botswana could expand its involvement in planetary research and create a solid network of collaboration with international partners, including Europlanet 2020 RI and the Europlanet Society. The workshop was attended by participants from BIUST, including the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor, representatives of Botswana’s Department of Research Science and Technology, the Astronomical Society of Botswana, the University of Botswana, participants from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Zambia and South Africa, and representatives of the Europlanet Society and Europlanet 2020 RI Transnational Access programmes.

During the workshop the delegates discussed how Botswana can capitalize on the existence of planetary field analogues in the country. Outcomes included an agreement by delegates to promote a pan-African network of space and planetary science building on existing networks developed through the International Astronomical Union.
